On factory pull-start engines (C85-12 thru O-300-C),
authority is by modification per STC
SE10076SC (engine modification) and STC
SA10077SC (airframe modification to replace
pull-start mechanism with push to start button).
Be aware there is a typo on page 3 of 3 of STC
SE10076SC. The FAA typed the wrong STC number at
the top of the page. It should read STC SE10076SC,
not SA1007SC. We have asked the FAA repeatedly for
correction for over three years!!! We continue to do so.
Support Docs for the STC(s) listed above can be found here.
This includes a letter of authorization to use the
STC's. |

Notes of explanation on
Lycoming Applications:
Sky-Tec LS, PM and HT
starters are certified by PMA (parts Manufacturer Approval)
Supplement 1 and are eligible for installation on all
Lycoming Engines listed in the AML of PMA
Supplement 1.
Lycoming
Service Instruction 1154(current
revision) is additional documentation allowing Sky-Tec
LS, PM, and HT Lycoming starters to be
installed a replacement for identical or any previously
certified Lycoming starter. Whereas the LS, PM and HT
starters are certified under PMA (parts Manufacturer Approval)
Supplement 1, NL model starters are certified via PMA
PQ0852SW Supplement 7.
Since certification of all Sky-Tec Lycoming starters is by PMA,
the only paperwork required is an engine logbook entry by the
installing A&P and a W&B change in the AFM.
This should cover 99% of Lycoming engines (give or take).
Notes of explanation on
Continental Applications:
Ancient History
for Lycoming Applications:
Sky-Tec LS, PM and HT
starters were originally certified with eligibility via STC
(see Lycoming Starter STC's below). If on the slim chance your
starter installation was approved under STC eligibility, your installation required an FAA form 337 to be
filed by an IA. The STC's (no longer used but still
valid) are:
